A tragic murder-suicide attempt was breaking news in Montgomery County, Texas, north of Houston. Rachel Butler was 26 years old and recently moved into a new home with her husband, Jason Butler, age 39. Police say Rachel called law enforcement and reported Jason shot her.
A tragic murder-suicide attempt was breaking news in Montgomery County, Texas, north of Houston. Rachel Butler was 26 years old and recently moved into a new home with her husband, Jason Butler, age 39. Police say Rachel called law enforcement and reported Jason shot her. Police arrived and found Rachel shot in the chest and rushed her the hospital and critical condition. Jason was pronounced dead after shooting himself in the head.
Public court records showed that Rachel had filed for a divorce from Jason not long before this tragedy just after midnight this past Sunday morning. KHOU-TV reported that the earlier on Saturday, Jason and Rachel attended a high school reunion and had an argument on the drive home. They say Jason retrieved his firearm from his truck and shot Rachel.

While there are several signs that a person could be violent, sometimes people just snap. We could consider whether the husband had any history of mental problems or violence, however, a person’s past conduct or experiences does not mean they are going to repeat or revisit them in the future. In short, there may not be any way to absolutely predict domestic violence.
Can you and your spouse agree to walk away when a fight escalates?
Mental health therapists who work with people experiencing anger management and rage issues may often suggest that when people start arguing they agree to take a moment and walk away and cool off, so things don’t get out of hand. Allowing space during heated arguments takes patience. When one party to a heated argument says they need to walk away, let them go instead of forcing them to stay and hear what you have to say. When people feel trapped, they may be more likely to strike.
While we do not know exactly what was sad on the evening Jason Butler shot his wife Rachel, but we can wonder whether either of them could have done something to deescalate the conflict and prevent this tragedy.
