In less than a month children in Texas will be back to school. There are only a few remaining weekends to get out of the house and spend some quality time with your children. Especially if this is your summer visitation month with one of your kids, creating memories now will mean much to you and them later in life. we all remember a few of the places our parents took us as children. Some of the best times were likely rather simple trips by our parents’ perspective, but to us they were amazing. From big city attractions in Dallas to rodeos in Fort Worth, there are many options at your doorstep or a few miles away. Where are you going to take your kids this weekend?
Take a walk with your children at the
Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden.
Sometimes going on a walk where there are things to discuss and look at open the door to nice communication among parents and children. With some kids you have to prime the pump, so to say, to get them talking about things. At the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens there are plenty of interesting exhibits to talk about as you all take a short break from your routines and enjoy one another’s company and get some exercise. Make sure you don’t forget the sunscreen and waters because it can get very warm when you’re on foot in the summer in Dallas. The Arboretum is a great place for a picnic and there are areas to spread out and enjoy.
Kids of all ages love
Six Flags Over Texas, and you will earn super parent points.
Anyone who has not been to Six Flags in several years, maybe since you were a kid yourself, is overdue for the thrill of a big theme park. Whether your kids are thrill seekers into the big rides or the water rides or live entertainment better fits their tastes, there are plenty of things to do and see at Six Flags. The park is open from 10:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. so you can pack in all sorts of fun if you plan your day ahead of time. You can save time by buying your tickets online as well. This year there is a new virtual reality roller coaster and if you mention that to your children, they may tell you all about it.
The animals and the rodeo at the
Fort Worth Stockyards are always fun to see.
You do not need to be a cowboy to enjoy a good rodeo. The Fort Worth Stockyards hosts a rodeo at the Cowtown Coliseum every Friday and Saturday evening and if your kids are age appropriate, they may get involved in a calf scramble. If rodeo is not your thing, there are still many things to do at the Stockyards. There is a train that comes in from Grapevine and a mock western live action theater. You can also tour the Stockyards and see so many of the animals that make the Lone Star State famous. There are so many great places to eat as well, when you take your kids to Fort Worth, where the west begins.
Do you teach your kids history? There are many air-conditioned museums to see.
There are many museums in and around the Metroplex. In Dallas, you and your children may enjoy learning about nature and science at the Perot Museum, or take a step in Dallas years passed at the Dallas Heritage Museum, where red-bricked Main Street homes and storefronts are on display. Fort Worth also has several museums, three of them all on the same street. In a few hours, if you are quick, you can see the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, the Kimball Art Museum and the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History, with child-friendly exhibits and an IMAX theatre.
Late July and early August are hot, get your splash on at
Hawaiian Falls.
Water parks can be a blast and you do not need to drive far to get to Hawaiian Falls, with convenient locations in Garland and The Colony. Make sure to remember the sunscreen because kids and adults can tan and burn easily with in the very reflective water. The water slides are a favorite of children and adults who want to run around and get a break from the Texas summer heat. If tubing and a more relaxed day is what you need, then Hawaiian Falls is a perfect weekend destination with the kids.
Never underestimate the fun children have at Jumpstreet Indoor Trampoline Park.
Jumping on a trampoline may seem like no big deal, but you will not say that when you visit Jumpstreet Indoor Trampoline Park. You will redefine trampolines when you and your kids first step out on the wall to wall trampolines where your kids can literally bounce off the walls. Not only can you bounce around, you can play basketball and make your way through challenging obstacle courses. If you want to get some good exercise and probably get some really fun pictures, add Jumpstreet to your list.
When it is time to hit the trails on horseback, head to River Ranch at Texas Horse Park.
It is a rite of passage for many Texans, to take an annual horseback riding trip with the kids. Whether your children (age nine and up) have never been on a horse or are able riders, you all will enjoy your time at River Ranch at Texas Horse Park, the 600-acre park just minutes from downtown Dallas in the Great Trinity Forest. If you or your children want to improve your riding skills, call ahead and schedule a lesson. You might just find out you want to come back more often than once a year.
