U.S. Supreme Court Legalizes Same-Sex Marriage

On June 26, 2015, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that every American’s right to marry was guaranteed by our Constitution. The decision effectively legalized same-sex marriage nationwide, sparking celebration in LGBT communities across the country and becoming one of the biggest civil rights victories in a generation.

Writing for the 5-4 majority among the justices, Justice Anthony Kennedy spoke passionately about the decision and the institute of marriage itself. “No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice and family,” he wrote. “Their (same-sex couples’) hope is not to be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization’s oldest institutions. They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right.”

President Obama also voiced his support that day, calling the decision a “victory for America.” He also addressed his long-standing support for the organizers and activists who long fought to make the decision happen. “In my second inaugural address, we said that if We are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well,” he told a White House Rose Garden audience. “It is gratifying to see that principle enshrined into law by this decision.”
